How to set flat-rate shipping that varies for different products
« Return to Shipping & Packaging calculator
If you want to charge the same flat rate shipping per item regardless of the specific product(s) purchased, you can simply create Shipping Rules that apply the Flat rate per item calculation method; however, if you want to set a different flat rate for different products, we can recommend a couple different approaches for that:
Approach A: Set a fixed Cost for varying Package Types
In your E-junkie Dashboard go to Manage Shipping & Tax > Shipping Preferences
- Enter a flat-rate Cost for up to 9 different Package Types (e.g., Small/Regular/Large Box/Envelope/Tube)
- Note that Tube package types have a special behavior, which the Box and Envelope types do not have:
- Tubes will consolidate items into the fewest, largest Tube containers specified for items in the same order;
- E.g., if Product A ships in a Small Tube, and Product B ships in a Large Tube with a Capacity of 2, then an order for 1 unit each of A and B would ship together in just 1 Large Tube, as 1 unit of A can occupy the vacancy in B's Large Tube (and note you don't have to ship in literal tubes if you want to take advantage of this special consolidation behavior).
- Click the Apply button to save changes.
In your E-junkie Dashboard go to Manage Products > View/Edit Products:
- Select an existing shippable product of yours and click View/Edit Product;
- Tick the box Require Buyer's Shipping Address;
- This will reveal a section for shipping options:
- Package Type: Select the Package Type with the flat-rate Cost this product will ship for;
- Capacity: If more than one unit of this product can ship together for that same flat-rate Cost, enter that number of units here;
- Weight: Will not matter in this scenario, so leave this blank/0.
- Click the Submit button to save changes;
- Repeat these steps for all your tangible goods;
- When adding new tangible products, remember to tick Require Buyer's Shipping Address and repeat the steps above.
Optional: If you also want to specify International flat-rates higher than your Domestic rates:
- In Manage Shipping & Tax > Shipping Preferences, also enter a Weight for each Package Type equal to the difference between your Domestic and Int'l flat rates for that Package Type—e.g., if your Domestic flat rate will be 5.00, and your Int'l flat rate will be 9.00, enter a Weight of 4.00 for that Package Type;
- In Manage Shipping & Tax > Shipping Rules, add a Shipping Rule for your own Country with a Flat rate per weight unit of 0.00, and another Shipping Rule for Country:All Countries with a Flat rate per weight unit of 1.00—this will result in the package Weight getting added to its Cost only for Int'l orders, but not for Domestic orders.
Approach B: Set a flat rate per item that can vary for every individual product
In your E-junkie Dashboard go to Manage Products > View/Edit Products:
- Select an existing shippable product of yours and click View/Edit Product;
- Tick the box Require Buyer's Shipping Address;
- This will reveal a section for shipping options:
- Weight: set this as equal to the flat-rate you will charge to ship each unit of this product -- e.g., if you will charge $5.00 per unit, enter 5.00 here.
- Package Type & Capacity will not matter in this scenario.
- Submit the new settings;
- Repeat these steps for all your tangible goods;
- When adding new tangible products, remember to tick Require Buyer's Shipping Address and repeat the steps above.
Go to Manage Shipping & Tax > Shipping Preferences and set up the following:
- Shipping Origin: select your country (and enter your ZIP code if you're in the US);
- Limit Shipping Destinations: if you will only ship to certain countries, tick this box and then select them in the list that appears;
- Leave all other settings blank or 0.00;
- Click Apply to save changes.
Go to Manage Shipping & Tax > Shipping Rules:
We'll need to start with a clean slate for this approach to work, so in the Current Shipping Rules list, select and Delete all Rules you may have saved there.
Set up your first Shipping Rule for Domestic shipping:
- Calculation Method: Rate per weight unit;
- Shipping Amount: 1.00;
- Destination Country: Select your country;
- Click Save to save the Rule.
If you will ship Internationally at a different rate:
- Calculation Method: Rate per weight unit;
- Shipping Amount: Enter a multiplier to be applied to your Domestic per-unit flat-rates -- e.g., if Int'l shipping will be double your Domestic rate, enter 2.00 here;
- Destination Country: All Countries (this covers the rest of your Shipping Destination countries that don't have a Rule of their own);
- Click Save to save the Rule.
If you will ship to nearby/selected countries at a different rate:
- Calculation Method: Price per weight unit;
- Shipping Amount: Enter a multiplier to be applied to your Domestic per-unit flat-rates -- e.g., if shipping to this country will be 50% more than your Domestic rate, enter 1.50 here;
- Destination Country: Select a country (this will override your Rule for All Countries when the buyer selects this country in their cart);
- Click Save to save the Rule;
- Repeat this section for each other country that isn't covered by your rates for Domestic nor International (All Countries) destinations.
