I sell CDs and LPs online. I want each release to be one product with the choice of ordering a CD or an LP. I see how to set the variants to get that top work. I am however stuck when it comes to SHIPPING OPTIONS. The CD ships in a much smaller inexpensive mailer than the LP. I want to be able to have the choice of whether they pick the CD or the LP to dictate what kind of Packaging Type gets used. Is there any way to set something like that up?

They only way to do that is to set up the CD and LP as two separate products. If you set them up as Variants of a common product, you can only choose the same packaging container type, although you can of course configure each Variant with a unique Weight of its own. The actual type of package does not by itself factor into shipping calculation; only the Cost and Weight you assign to each container type matters at all.
