I don't need a Buy Now button since I'm going to include the link to the product (which is free) in an email. But when I put in the url in the code below it takes me to a shoppingcart page anyway where I need to fill in my information again.

From a service standpoint I'd rather not have the person have to fill in their information twice (once on my web page and then again in the shopingcart). Is there anyway I can just give them the link to the ejunkie hosted document?

<a href="3http://www.e-junkie.com/ecom/gb.php?c=cart;i=788986;cl=94301;ejc=23" target="ejejc" class="ec_ejc_thkbx"><img src="http://www.e-junkie.com/ej/ej3add_to_cart.gif" border="0" alt="Add to Cart"/></a>

Would I just need to give them the url in the confirmation email?

Thanks.

Winnie

If you're not using us to sell the file and not using us to collect customer info such as name, email, etc., then it's not clear what need you would have for our service at all?

You don't really need any sort of special "download service" like E-junkie just to provide a free file download. You can simply upload your file to your own Web site and make a regular link to that file's URL, just like you would make a link from one page to another.

If you want customers to fill out their info first, then set up the form where they provide that info such that submitting the form takes them to a thanks page where you have the link to your file. None of this would require any extra service such as E-junkie.

OK, here's what may be a stupid follow-up question...

So if I use ejunkie to deliver the download and capture the signup information, do I have to manually enter them into my newsletter list?

We already maintain a Buyer Group mailing list for each product you sell:

You could also use our Aweber integration to have us automatically submit buyers for subscription to a mailing list you maintain with Aweber:

Other mailing list services that can accept PayPal IPN may be able to work with our IPN-style generic Integration feature (you might send them this link to see if they can work with it):

Hello E-junkieGuru,

I saw your answer above to whanderson about not needing ejunkie to provide a free download. Actually, I do, because my website is a Site Build It website and although they are wonderful in so many ways there are a few places that they can not support. For instance, there is a 100 MB limit on files and no way that I can figure out to offer it as a download from my site right now, I can only keep it on my site for others to hear.

I'd like to provide the ability to download the file to my users as well. Any ideas?

Thanks so much!

Our service is designed for selling downloads rather than giving them away for free. It is possible to generate a limited amount of free download links and we can process a limited number of free checkouts per day which should cover your needs if you need to give free samples to reviewers, but it would not be the best way to provide free downloads to the public at large.

If you cannot deliver the files directly off of your webhost you could use a file hosting service such as Rapidshare or Mediafire to give your prospects a free download link. Note that these services would not be compatible with ours if you wanted to remotely host your files, but for giving away files directly to the public they would suffice.

Hi E-Junkie Monster!

Thanks so much for the quick reply--I didn't explain that very well. I'm holding a free teleseminar, which is a preview call for a product I'm launching (& will be selling). As is customary, lots of coaches do this, I'm enticing prospects to get in on the call by offering the free download so that they can still listen even if they can't be on the call at the time. That way they'll hear the offer for the product as well.

The recording will be on my site protected by a password as well, but it's a nice bonus to give them the option of the download. I'm just starting out with this so it looks like even if everyone took me up on the download there wouldn't be more than 50 or 60, and human nature says they won't all take me up on it. :-)

What do you think? When I get the product sold (it's a 5 part teleseries), I'll still want to offer downloads as a bonus, but when I get sales I'd definitely increase to the $18 price (that package includes free downloadable links, right?)

Thanks so much for your help.

Actually, any account can generate free download links, and any account can handle a set amount of free checkouts in a day.

What the $18+/mo plans offer is remote hosting, which allows you to store your files on your own server rather than paying for extra digital storage directly on the E-junkie servers. That is handy if you have a great deal of data to store but it's actually worse if you want to give away free downloads because we impose a minimum price of $0.10 on products with remotely hosted files.

One of the reasons we have limits on free downloads is that we have to cover bandwidth costs for all of our merchants. We can handle the demand for downloads that result from purchases, if we had to also handle the much greater demand for free downloads across the board we wouldn't be able to keep our costs under control.

Given what you are describing you probably won't have a lot of problems giving out some free downloads for your teleseminar. We already allow 100 free checkouts per day for basic accounts, you could just give your prospects a discount code to download your products from your site at no cost. Giving out 50-60 free downloads in a day is not a problem.

2 years later

I figured out the answer to the questions below which is to use the "add to cart" button code rather than the "buy now" button code which uses a payment processor. Hope this helps anyone having the same issue.

I understand that e-junkie is not in the business of hosting free downloads. I'm selling several products but also want to offer a temporary free download, collect the names and email addresses and integrate them with an aWeber list. I also like the idea that the free downloads are limited to 100 per day.

My issues:

Discount codes cannot make the price $0.00

When setting the product price to $0.00, after clicking the Buy Now button and being redirected to PayPal, PayPal forces the user to enter a price other than $0.00.

Collecting the info of people interested in the free download and manually sending out individual messages with the free download link is not a viable option.

I would very much appreciate a response to know if I can do what I would like to do through e-junkie as opposed to hosting the free download file myself.

Thanks,

Steven

You've got it. It just takes our recommended Add to Cart buttons to handle a $0 sale.

A $0 transaction goes through our own system rather than a payment processor like PayPal, since there's no payment to actually handle. Buy Now buttons can't do such a transaction because they are designed to point directly to a payment processor which will then refuse the total. That skipped step is handy when you are selling a single digital product that has a price of $0.01 or more, but if you want to do it free an add to cart button is the way to go.
