I am not sure if there is a setting I have missed somewhere, but I need to scroll 3 browser widths across to see all the details on a single transaction. Is this just the way it is? or can I change a setting somewhere?'

It occurs with both Firefox and Explorer

That's just the way it is; each line needs to be fairly long to report all the data we collect for each transaction. You might try using the Zoom or Text Size menu options in your browser to shrink things down a bit. Also note that you can simply click on any row to highlight that entire row, which makes it easier to follow across the full width.

Furthermore, you can download any log view to a file on your computer, which you can unzip and open in any spreadsheet program such as Excel, iWork Numbers or (free) Gnumeric.

Depends on your screen resolution. If you use a full hd monitor and zoom a little, it fits all on one page.

Yes Cat, but then normal web pages would fit in 1/3 of your screen. My point really was the display fonts and column sizes are set too large

I downloaded my transaction log and it unzips as a text file that CANNOT be opened in Excel. What can I do to get it to open?

Hm, Excel normally opens it just fine in our experience, but try changing the filename extension to .csv (instead of .txt), although the format is technically tab-delimited (rather than Comma Separated Values).

If that still doesn't work, change back to .txt and try Importing the file; I found these pages on Microsoft's site you may find helpful:
