Based on legal advice, I have added a "Common Thank-you Email Message" with a legal weasel to protect me from liability. Is there a way I can have the message sent to people who receive free downloads from me or would I have to do it manually?

Unfortunately, the Common Thank-you Email can only be sent for actual orders, not for free links issued via Send Free Download Link. However, if you want to override the item's Product Thank-you Email for a free link, or if that item's Product Thank-you Email is disabled (in which case there would be no default message to send with a free link), you can enter a custom Email Message when you send the free link that would override what's defined in the product's settings.

You might also consider adding your legalese to your Common Thank-you Page HTML (in Seller Admin > Edit Preferences), which gets inserted at the end of every thank-you/download page we generate for you. Buyers have to visit that page at some point to download at all, whereas there's no guarantee they would ever open or read any thank-you email.

Thanks Guru.

That page would appear five times if I sold a package of five PDFs, correct? I have been selling quite a few packages, well more than I used to :-).

I worry that it would piss people off if it was something they would have to get past for every download. That's what I liked about the Common Thank-you Email, it would only go out once. I would just have to compose a provocative subject link that they couldn't resist opening.

Now I'm thinking I'm confused and don't understand. Is there an additional page buyers would have to look at, or would my weasel just be under "Click here to download Salish Sea Pilot's Desolation Sound guide" for example? There is nothing there now. It would be perfect. If it's not an extra page buyers would have to look at I'm sold...

Whatever you put in Common Thank-you Page HTML only gets inserted once at the end of the page, regardless of how many item(s) are in the buyer's order. This help page explains more about thank-you page customization and provides an example at the end showing which customizations get inserted where in the page:

If you don't want to send buyers multiple thank-you email messages when they purchase multiple items, you can disable the Product Thank-you Email in each product's settings, and keep your Common Thank-you Email, which only gets sent once per entire order. In this case, make sure your Common email message template includes the template tag [%thankyou_link%] where you want the link to be inserted (ideally on a line by itself), and DO leave the Common Thank-you Page URL field blank. Note that buyers still may not necessarily ever open or read this message, if their payment was completed quickly enough that they could claim their download immediately following checkout (as is nearly always the case with rare exception).
