"link has expired"

Hello!



I've never had any problems with this, but since yesterday, I have received various emails from people who say they get the 'your link has expired' error message upon the first try of downloading.

In one case, I could get away with refreshing the download link, but in the other cases I've had to manually send them the pdf.



What is causing this?

I know one lady tried to download it from her phone, and I know one other lady forwarded the email to her husband's computer to download it from there. I am not sure of what actions the other people took that could have messed the download link up :)



Is there something wrong with the server?

We're not experiencing any problems at all, the only way this message can appear is if your settings to expire a link have been fulfilled, either for time or number of uses. If you are getting many complaints about expired links you may want to consider increasing the number of attempts and/or time that you allow.



You can also see how many attempts have actually been made on any given link and test it yourself from your transactions log, just click the transaction ID or product name to see the link sent out for that purchase.

Yes, I've checked that, but none of them had any tries of downloading yet. When they forwarded me the download email, I could click it and it would just take me to the download. I didn't get the expired message they got. It must be something they are doing wrong, but I can't imagine what it would be.

Whenever you use "Re-activate expired link", that resets the expiration count for that link as if it had just been issued, so after that point you would not see any Attempts in your log for that link until someone (e.g. you or the buyer) tries using that link again.



Software on the buyer's computer may use up Attempts on their link before they have a chance to try the link themselves -- see the section about Software Issues on this help page for details:

Since you mentioned one buyer tried to use her phone, downloading directly to mobile devices (smartphones or tablets, including iPad or iPhone) can be a bit of a mixed bag, depending on the particular device and what software the buyer has installed on it. Buyers using an actual computer (including laptops or netbooks) should normally have no trouble downloading from our system, and they should be able to sync the file to their mobile device from there.
