I'm also having issues with sending the free link email. I sent a few to myself directly. And I've sent a few to my customer with my email address cc'd. I haven't received any and its been almost an hour.

When you disable the item-specific thank-you emails for a product (by Enabling Templated Email in the product's setting but leaving the Email Message field blank), then there is no default message to send for that product when you send a free link, so you'd need to either enter a custom message on the Send Free Link screen, or just copy the free link generated and paste that into a personal email you'd send them directly.
