Hello,

I often run store-wide sales with a coupon code. Since the change over to the new interface, I can't seem to figure out how to do that now. Can you help?

Hi,

We've updated our help documentation on discounts to explain what everything in the new interface does, see here for full details:

A store-wide sale can be done with a discount code set to apply to the "Cart Item Total" instead of any specific product. That discount can be a flat amount or a percentage of the total order.

As always, eJunkie support is awesome. Thank you!

1 month later

Watch out!!! I created a discount and by default it applied itself storewide and always on. I created a $40 coupon for a customer order. I used it, then I went back to the cart 20 minutes later and to my surprise, it was still there!!! Then I found out that someone else had placed an order that was like for $85 and it took $40 off their order.

Don't really like how the default functionality of the discount codes have changed. Kind of dumb really.

The only way a discount can auto-apply would be if you leave the Discount Code field blank in the discount's settings. When a discount is set up without any Code, it will auto-apply to any order that meets the discount's other conditions (specific item, expiration/use count, and/or min item qty./total). This has always been the case, even with our old Admin. Note the distinction between a Discount Name (which we use to keep track of which discount is which) vs. a Discount Code (which the buyer must enter in their cart to claim the discount).

Nothing has changed in the way discounts work; we only rearranged how the settings appear in the new Admin, to eliminate common pitfalls caused by some unintuitive technicalities -- e.g., in the old Admin, changing an existing Discount Name actually created a new discount under the new Name without removing or altering the original discount under the old Name, and it wasn't clear that item-specific discounts alter the original per-unit price (and thus get multiplied by the item quantity) whereas All Cart Items discounts only apply a single discount to the cart total.

um, it has changed. believe me. I have only been using this for 6+ years.

Discounts configured without any Discount Code have always self-applied automatically in the nearly 8 years I've been working for E-junkie. When applied to an order, these discounts would show up as "Current Promotion" in the cart and in your Transaction Log. You may not have encountered this before if you'd never created any discounts with a blank Discount Code field.

Your Transaction Log lists a couple sales the afternoon of Dec. 5th which used a "Current Promotion" discount. The Discount ID number noted there is no longer present in your currently configured discounts, so it appears you've deleted the discount responsible for those cases by now; that ID number is also higher than any of your current discounts, so it must have been created after them. You currently have only one discount configured without a Discount Code, named "florent", but that has already met its Max. Use Count of 1 and is thus expired.
