Discount codes

I am confused by the discount Codes... I would like for people to enter a code and get a 20% discount, but it can only be applied to Non Sale items. I have no problem going into each item and making a discount code for it, but where/ when do customers enter this code? I have tried doing this to one product as a test can't seem to get it working. Do I need to have some check box marked?

f you use our ADD TO CART buttons and buyers add a product for which you have specifically created discount codes, they will see a field in the cart to enter the discount code.



Alternatively, after you have create the discount code for each item, the BUY NOW button code generated for that product will contain a field to enter the discount code.
