Hey everyone,

I'm Mike. I'm getting my website ready to go live and start selling my ebook in PDF format. I'm not super tech savvy, I was wondering if anyone had some boiler plate instructions for me to include in the thank you email about how to download the book.

Also, I was thinking about recommending adobe reader app because the book looks best in that (ibooks looked really bad for some reason). Would you guys recommend using this? Are there security precautions you recommend? I'm going to do PDF stamping but figured I would hold off on the password. An article I read on this site indicated it doesn't do much to prevent piracy and just gets in the way of honest customers.

Any thoughts or suggestions on how to instruct my customers to download their books, or to secure my ebook are greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

-Mike

Also, you can check out my website here getremobilized.com We haven't put the updated version live, but I figured I would share.

Hi Mike,

If you are delivering PDF documents there's very little you might possibly need to give out in the way of instructions.

That's not to say that you won't be contacted by some buyers that don't know how to save a file off of the internet but the process itself is so straightforward that you might be better off approaching each of those inquiries individually rather than giving them a boiler plate on how to click the default Save button that appears when the download link is clicked.

Most devices and desktop computers come with a way to read PDF files built in, or can get one for free so you probably won't need to direct buyers where to get PDF readers either.

Thanks!

So the same goes for tablet users? Are there any concerns with recommending abode reader app because this is what the book looks best on?

As for security, is PDF stamping enough?

I can't think of any reason you could not recommend adobe's reader for PDFs. It's the major one to use.

Our PDF stamping will help to discourage file sharing but keep in mind there are no fool-proof online security measures. The only thing you can ever do is make piracy inconvenient, and the more inconvenience you build into your product the more your legitimate buyers also suffer, and you can lose more sales than you protect by taking heavy handed measures.

The best security is to make your product easy to buy at a reasonable price, so that it isn't worth the bother for someone to even look for a pirated copy or someone willing to share theirs.
